Teaching Philosophy

I have a flexible teaching style with expectations that are individualized to each student I work with. One person’s success may not be defined in the same way as another, and I establish a working relationship with each student to assist their pursuit of their musical goals.

I work with a variety of styles of music, including classical, modern, pop, musical theater, and jazz. Using classical vocal technique and pedagogical exercises, I teach my students about their voice so that they can confidently and knowledgeably sing. My students learn sight-singing and music reading, which are important tools for any level of interest in music.

In lessons, I incorporate breathing techniques, common in yoga practice and stress management, as well as body-mapping and awareness exercises, into the repertoire we practice. Because our vocal instrument is inside of our body, we cannot manipulate it in the same way we do with a physical instrument. Tuning, control, and balance of the voice are all possible with a deeper understanding and familiarity with the function of the voice.

Beyond the technical elements of singing, I also teach my students how to communicate more effectively on, and off-stage. Using Meisner and Laban acting techniques, I support my students in exploring their creativity and story-building. We study the words of the songs we sing, and talk about the meaning and importance of speaking with intention. These skills support students as they learn to navigate through life with confidence and self-assurance.

In piano lessons, my students learn about reading music, music history, and music theory. Reading music is much like reading a different language, and requires a level of dedication and interest from each student. In support of this, I help my students build a routine of regular practicing and studying. Piano lessons are often viewed as starting place before learning another instrument, and I work with that expectation as well. My students learn all the elements of music in a way that can be translated into different styles and instruments.

I teach my students to become well-rounded musicians, and my goal is to inspire a deeper curiosity and appreciation for music, language, and art.
